The generator gets the credit. The fuel system does the work.

A standby generator is an engine. An engine needs fuel — delivered continuously, at the right pressure, at the right volume, the moment the power drops. That delivery is a separate system, and it’s the part that decides whether your generator actually runs.

Why this matters

A generator is only as good as what feeds it

Most people shop for a generator by kilowatts and brand. Almost nobody asks the question that determines whether it works on the worst night of the year: can the fuel system deliver what the engine demands, under full load, without starving?

When a generator is undersupplied it doesn’t fail dramatically. It surges, it stumbles when the air conditioning kicks on, it throws a fault and shuts down — usually hours into the outage, when the house is finally leaning on it. The generator is fine. The gas side was never sized for the job.

What actually feeds a standby generator

Five pieces have to work together. Miss one and the generator inherits the problem.

The tank

Sized for more than storage. Propane has to boil off inside the tank fast enough to keep up with demand — a tank that’s too small for the load can’t vaporize quickly enough and pressure drops, even with plenty of fuel still in it.

Regulation

Tank pressure is far higher than an engine can take, and it moves with temperature. Regulators step it down and hold it steady, so the generator sees the same pressure at 2 a.m. as it did at noon.

The line

Diameter and length together decide how much gas can actually arrive. A line that’s fine for a range or a fire pit can be nowhere near enough for a generator running the whole house.

Shutoff and connection

A dedicated shutoff at the unit, the right flexible connector, and a sediment trap where required — so the generator can be isolated and serviced without touching the rest of the house.

Test and inspection

The finished system is pressure tested and inspected by the county before it goes into service. That’s not paperwork — it’s the step that catches what nobody can see.

The most common mistake

Adding a generator to a line that was never meant for it

A house already has gas going to the range, the water heater, maybe a pool heater and a fire feature. Tapping the generator into that existing line looks like the cheap route, and it is — right up until everything runs at once.

Every appliance on a shared line draws from the same supply. The generator has to be accounted for on top of the existing connected load, not squeezed into whatever is left over. That calculation is the whole job, and it’s why the fuel side gets designed before anything gets installed.

Worth knowing: propane gas work in Florida is licensed and permitted work. A generator fuel system has to be installed by a licensed LP gas contractor, permitted with your jurisdiction, and inspected before use — it isn’t a homeowner or handyman job, and an uninspected install can affect both your insurance and your generator’s warranty.
