Propane is a safe, clean fuel when installed and maintained by licensed professionals. Knowing these basics keeps it that way.
Propane is odorless on its own, so an odorant is added that smells like rotten eggs or a skunk. If you notice that smell — even faintly — treat it as a leak until proven otherwise. Some people have a reduced sense of smell, and odorant can fade in rare cases, so also watch for hissing near lines or tanks, dead vegetation near a buried line, or bubbles in standing water.
Properly installed and vented propane appliances burn cleanly. Malfunctioning or improperly vented ones can produce carbon monoxide — an odorless gas. Install CO detectors near sleeping areas, and if anyone experiences headaches, dizziness, or nausea that improves when they leave the building, get out and call 911.
