We do the propane side — the tank, the piping, the regulation and the testing that makes it start on the night the grid goes down. Sized wrong, a generator starves and drops out under load, usually at three in the morning during a storm.
Why propane for this
We size the tank and the line to the generator’s full draw, not its idle. That is a much bigger number than most people expect.
Propane stores indefinitely and does not go stale. A correctly sized tank carries a house through a multi-day outage.
Nobody is queuing at a gas station with a can while the wind is still up.
We run it under load and confirm the pressure holds where it should, because that is the only real proof.
Sizing, plainly
A standby generator can pull more propane on its own than every other appliance in the house combined. That is why the gas line to a generator is usually larger than people expect, and why a tank that was fine for a range and a water heater will not carry a generator as well.
We work from the manufacturer’s BTU figure at full load, the distance from the tank, and what else is on the system. Then we allow for the coldest realistic day, because pressure drop is worst when demand is highest. If a bigger tank is the right answer we will say so before you buy.
